The 13th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art passing the fugitive on began with a successful opening week. More than 20.000 visitors saw the exhibition at its four locations in Berlin. At the opening, 2000 professional visitors and 350 members of the press were registered. The event program Encounters began with Han Bing’s performance Walking the Cabbage in Berlin through the streets of Berlin-Mitte, also recorded 300 spectators. On the opening weekend, they experienced four performances of Major Nom’s The Beggars’ Convention in the Sophiensæle and the performance The Berlin Statement. Who Makes Profit on Art and Who Gains From It Honestly? by Milica Tomić at the former Courthouse Lehrter Straße and Gabriel Alarćons 4000 m. ü NN at Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart.
On Thursday, Mila Panic’s installation Big Mouth premiered as a live club for stand-up comedy for the first time with the guest act Deo Katunga. The first of three planned People’s Tribunals concluded the week with a trial concerning the persecution of female activists in Sudan.
The Encounters are expressly not conceived as a public program, but are part of the exhibition in their quality of orality and openness. Conversely, many of the more than 170 positions of the more than 60 artists and collectives are aimed at participation, public involvement, theatricality, and humor: here the art itself should speak.
The 13th Berlin Biennale runs until September 14, 2025. The calendar on our website provides information on the upcoming program. Many of the free performances must be booked in advance, as capacity is sometimes limited.
